30 vs 60 fps - Why it matters

Thu Jan 08, 2015 9:42 am

Just something to help the discussions regarding 30 fps vs 60 fps. Many believe or want us to believe that there is no difference but there clearly is.

I captured the Intro of F.E.A.R. at 30 and then at 60 fps, cut out a part that has a smooth scrolling section and put it together into a 60 fps clip.

IF the 60 fps section isn't butter smooth then try another player or try in full screen mode and without. For example on one of my systems Chrome in full screen doesn't play it smooth but IE does.

You need to watch this in 720p60 or 1080p60 mode.

Also the Play Station 4 supports it as well :)

I guess there is a difference, but 30 FPS are more than fine to watch.
It's like switching vom 80% quality to 100% quality in Bandicam.
You might see the difference, but it doesn't matter, the experience is nearly the same.
In my opinion 60 FPS are just a file size enlarger and no quality optimizer.
But everybodey can decide that on his / her own.

The file size actually stays the same. It is based on the bit rate you see. Codecs actually become more efficient the more frames they have to work with as the changes from frame to frame are smaller.

The other issue is that with YouTube there is no control over what device you're watching it on. Setups can be quite different, with different graphics cards, drivers, displays and so you might not actually be getting the 60 fps experience.

But I understand, it's not an issue for everyone :)

Recording in 60 fps uses more cpu/gpu and decreases the in-game fps more than recording in 30 fps or it stays pretty much the same?

If you can run the game on steady 60+ and you have fairly nice gaming hardware then the frame drop will be insignificant. Be it hardware encoding or software.

I'm using XVid Coded, 60 fps, CBR, 100000 kbps, Key Interval 1. It's very "easy" on the system. FRAPS is much more demanding and often can't capture smooth 60 fps.

I do have a good processor though. Core i7 3770 with Nvidia GTX660.
